Yuh Jamming Still? Trinidad Carnival 2018

Welp, Trinidad Carnival is creeping up on us like…

Bandlaunch season is here in Trinidad and now comes the excitement of new costumes and anxiety on which section to play and which band. Usually I’m a die hard Yuman (masquerader who plays with the carnival band Yuma) but last year I was coerced to play in Tribe. I wasn’t impressed. There were too many masqueraders on the road to thoroughly enjoy myself and I felt annoyed almost 75% of the time. And if you know me, you know the road is my happy place.

The explanation for the “ram out ness” was supposedly the overflow of masqueraders from the band, Island People who did not release a presentation last year. SO, this year now that there’s a new band joining Tribe, Rogue, I’m giving Tribe a second chance. If next year has me feeling anything like this year, back to Yuma I go!

Tribe’s 2018 presentation is named, “Once Upon A Dream.” Initially I liked a few sections but within a couple days, registration for those sections sold out. Wanderlust, a section that caught my eye in the beginning is my costume for the road 2018.

I usually NEVER do headpieces because I hate having things on my forehead, sliding down and being a hassle when I want to get on bad. However, the headpiece just MAKES this costume so although I was tempted to say, “just do the tiara nah“, I got it. My friend Kieran, a costume designer will be customizing some pieces to add to this costume to give this backline a push up!

I was seriously considering playing Frontline this year but after receiving my pricelist for fete tickets, my bank account told me to humble myself. Every year I ask myself why I spend so much blasted money on Carnival and then I start splurging on unneccesaries like a Frontline costume that I know will end on the side of the road after a phone photo shoot and a hour chip. I throw off backpacks like a graduation cap.
