Touristy In Trinidad

So finally….I made it back to Trinidad after my last trip in February. I’ve been itching to go but every opportunity I had was either plagued with a storm, delay or no open seats (because who pays for travel?)

I flew to Port of Spain from Newark Airport for the first time and it was the most stressful thing ever. I was late leaving the house and decided to make the idiotic decision of taking public transportation when in a rush. We made it to the gate with about 20 minutes to spare and after being blessed with 2 first class seats. When we did board, we were told we were delayed and had to turn back and out into the concourse. Our initial 30 minute delay turned into a 2 hour delay because of weather.

We arrived into Piarco Airport around 2:30 am and headed to our guesthouse, Culture Crossroads Inn in St.James. I have nothing but amazing reviews for this place. The owner Colin was extremely helpful and friendly, even offering us a ride into town our first day there. The room was clean, the guesthouse was in a great location and I will definitely stay here again. You can check the website out here.

Our first day was a buffer day. We hung out with family, ate and headed to Movietowne in the night for dinner and movies. I decided to try a sushi place that is always plastered over my friend’s Instagram called “Kaizen.” I know sushi in Trinidad sounds weird but this was indeed a tourist trip. I wanted to try things I normally don’t do since I can always get the typical Trini food in my kitchen.

I ordered a side of udon noodles and a platter that offered 2 types of sushi rolls, two raw options and tuna pokes. The raw stuff went to waste however since I’m not that adventurous with my food choices but the Caribbean Sensation roll was BOMB ! And the udon noodles hit all spots!!! If you like noodles, then you can very well order this as a appetizer and a small sushi platter for an entree.

The next day we went ziplining and to the beach. For a couple years I’ve been trying to go ziplining after they started offering it but NO ONE ever wanted to go. There’s always a joke about dying or falling off the line accompanied in their reason for not going. The company offering the ziplining tours is called Zipiit TT. They offer a zip line for adults, children and bike rentals. For my first time, I was expecting ziplining to be a lot like ….

It was, minus the alcohol and street festivities. Being located right adjacent to Macqueripe Bay you are surrounded by the tropical forest and can see views of the beach and the Caribbean Sea when zipping across. It is not as high as I expected but I’m an adventure junkie so I might have had my expectations a bit high. We got there for the first tour that starts at 10am but of course Trini’s run on Trini time. When we walked up to the main desk they were now cleaning and prepping the area for opening.

There were a total of 7 zip lines and a couple canopy walks. Halfway through our tour it started to rain so we took shelter on the base of a treehouse trying to wait out the shower. In that time I was karate chopping  all the mosquitoes that were sucking the life out of me. The rain didn’t give up so we went through a couple lines in the rain which was cool.

It was definitely a lot easier than I expected but I will love to try a higher and longer line another time. If you’re looking for something different to do on short Trinidad trip or long layover , I definitely recommend Zipiit. You can finish ziplining in a hour or hour and a half depending on the  size of your group and still be able to catch a beach bath amongst other things.

Maracas beach or any beach is a must when I reach in Trinidad. We spent the rest of the afternoon on the beach. Bake and shark, the staple of Maracas Beach was accompanied with a nice ice cold stag. If you are traveling to Trinidad in the next upcoming months I’ll warn you of the appearance. The government is finally finishing a project to create new establishments for the vendors on the beach front and has displaced the food vendors onto the beach. It honestly doesn’t look too attractive but the food is still great, same way.

After the beach, we went back to Kaizen for dinner. I can’t remember the exact name of my dish but it was Thai style fish (Maybe…..??). Dessert was a fried Oreo, vanilla ice cream and fudge combo.

Since this was a weekend getaway, babe left after the second night to head back to work and I stayed an extra two days. I spent these days  buying a million snacks to take back, shopping and spending time with family.

That’s  is it for now!!
